At Nordhavn, we continually strive to design and equip our boats using the latest technology. In doing so, we are constantly educating ourselves to ensure our boats stay ahead of the curve. It is only after intense research that we determine whether a new component should become a standard feature of a boat ‘s design. And while it ‘ s important that PAE ‘ s engineering and design team are familiar with the new component, it is just as important that the manufacturing staff at our factories understand the product as well.
Case in point were two recent seminars presented to the personnel at the South Coast factory in Xiamen, China. PAE’s Yacht Systems Design Consultant, Mickey Smith, went to South Coast to educate the yard ‘ s electrical and mechanical technicians on updated systems philosophies. About 20 members from the technical and engineering departments of South Coast ‘ s China and Taiwan yards listened intently as Mickey presented the latest material which is based on the ABYC Standards. Subjects presented ranged from vessel safety, systems reliability, and proper workmanship techniques.
“It was great to see them really pouring over this information, ” said Mickey. “The people at the yard are hungry for information to help them build a better boat. ”
Later, two representatives of John Deere – Tim Hess and Dwight Allen – joined Mickey in the classroom to discuss the new engines that are going into all the Nordhavn 55s. John Deere engines have been used on some N57s and N62s but since the 55 is a brand new boat, the folks representing the company felt it was important that start-up went smoothly. Tim, owner of Cascade Engine Center in Seattle, an authorized dealer of John Deere, wanted to ensure PAE felt comfortable with their engine choice.
The group soon moved from the classroom to the engine room. There, hands-on training took place so factory techs could understand all the necessary checks for start-up, potential problems, and troubleshooting solutions.
“This was an important lesson for the South Coast workers because now they know what potential issues to be on the lookout for and can head off any problems, ” said Nordhavn 55 Project Manager Dave Harlow. ” It has enabled them to fine tune their installation capabilities, and importantly, has provided a testing and documentation system for each boat ‘ s engine. ” A recorded history of the engine is vital in case a failure ever happened down the road.
Added Mickey Smith: ” The yards in Taiwan and China have a staff that is capable and take great
pride in the boats they build. They are supportive of efforts to help them meet the goal of building a good product. “
