Overview
Beyond Capricorn 1 is a stunning Nordhavn 57 that has been well looked after since new. The Nordhavn 57 has been a well proven model that has cruised all over the world and has crossed many oceans time and time again. Beyond Capricorn 1 has been refitted several times over the years and has up-to-date electronics and navigational equipment. This vessel is ready for serious ocean going cruising, coastal cruising or island hopping. Beyond Capricorn 1 has been set up for a crew, and there is a separate lower cabin near the engine room with over-under bunks and a private full head. This is a unique feature for the Nordhavn 57.
Entering Beyond Capricorn 1 through the cockpit one will notice how spacious this area is. The open layout of the cockpit would allow for teak chairs and a table and would be a great area for morning coffee or a dining area. There is a built-in FRP console with storage and an aft control station. This is a great area to operate the vessel while docking or fishing. There are watertight access hatches to enter the lazarette as well. The teak decks and high gloss varnished teak cap rail add the final touches to this functional area.
The salon on Beyond Capricorn 1 is a great space to entertain with the galley being open to this area, so no one is left out. The salon is lined with high gloss teak wood which looks spectacular. The port side of the salon is equipped with a built-in settee and folding high gloss teak dining table. There is room for eight guests at this gorgeous dining table when in the fully open position. The starboard side of the salon is equipped with a comfortable loose sofa, flat screen television, built-in refrigeration and plenty of storage lockers and drawers.
Beyond Capricorn 1’s galley is a truly great space. The appliances have been upgraded, both in 2019 and 2021. The galley is equipped with both Miele and Vitrofrigo high-end appliances that are all very well laid out. The chef of the vessel will not have any issues with this well equipped and well laid out galley. The raised high gloss teak and granite countertop hide all the cooking equipment from the guests in the salon.
The owner’s suite of Beyond Capricorn 1 is located mid-ship so this will be the most comfortable cabin onboard, as it should be. The queen bunk is centrally located with a mirrored headboard with high gloss teak nightstands on each side. This cabin is equipped with large hanging lockers and ample drawer space. There are opening portlights that allow for great natural light and ventilation. These portlights are equipped with stainless steel deadlights as well for safety. The owner’s suite head is a great, comfortable area well. The head is equipped with granite countertops, tile floor and a full size FRP molded shower as well.
Forward of the owner’s suite are the two guest cabins on Beyond Capricorn 1. Off to the port side there is a cabin with upper and lower bunks, and this cabin is finished with high gloss teak. There are opening portlights for natural light and ventilation. The starboard cabin has a modified full bunk and is also finished with high gloss teak, and just like the port cabin there is a portlight for natural light and ventilation. These two cabins share a single head which is located forward of the cabins. This head is equipped with granite countertops, tiled floor and a full-size shower. The guest aboard Beyond Capricorn 1 will be pleased with the accommodations.
The pilothouse on Beyond Capricorn 1 is a captain’s dream. The entire vessel is operated from here. The helm is equipped with new updated electronics and you can tell a lot of thought went into their layout. Electronic and navigation equipment is listed below. The main electrical panel is located in the pilothouse and is quite easy to access. There is a single Stidd helm chair with autopilot controls built into the arm rest. The settee in the pilothouse is where you will find the guests congregating while underway. This settee is equipped with a built-in high gloss dining table and it is a truly enjoyable area.
From the pilothouse is access to the flybridge of Beyond Capricorn 1. The flybridge is a wonderful place to operate the vessel with 360-degree views and open air. The helm is equipped with updated electronics and navigation equipment as well as two helm chairs. Aft of the helm chairs is a settee and built-in high gloss teak table. The entire area is protected from the sun by stainless steel and an FRP top. This custom hardtop has been extended aft to cover the custom seat area built into the boat deck. This custom seat area for at least six guests has a built-in settee, table and loose furniture. It’s a great area for outdoor dining and entertaining. Above the custom FRP hardtop are solar panels and the upgraded navigation equipment. One unique feature are the folding stacks, which would allow this vessel to complete the Great Loop.

Design Features
Beyond Capricorn 1 was built to Australian survey standards in 2001 and has many extra features not usually included in the conventional build. Requirements to comply with ‘Survey’ include many standard features on a Nordhavn, such as commercial fire control and firefighting equipment. However, there are many other statutory requirements to meet ‘Survey’ standards that are difficult, if not impossible to achieve in an ‘off-the-shelf’ design. An Australian Government marine surveyor was flown to the Ta Shing shipyard in Taiwan to witness and inspect all construction methods, procedures and design. One of the most important parts of the ‘Survey’ requirements and one of the most difficult to achieve is the ‘Inclining’ test and associated ‘Stability’ calculations. The ‘Incline’ test is used to calculate the ‘Lightship’ stability characteristics of the vessel with all loose equipment removed, all tanks sounded and fluid weights calculated. This information is used to establish the Lightship Center of Gravity and Lightship Center of Buoyancy. All equipment, stores, liquids, etc. loaded after this calculation should be recorded in the vessel’s stability booklet as they and their location will change the ship’s stability criteria. Two copies of the vessel’s ‘Stability Book’ are kept onboard. Beyond Capricorn 1 has performed well in all sea states and has been safely and successfully operated by two people during our ownership.

Following a major electrical upgrade in Croatia in 2021 the vessel is now equipped with a full 24v Lithium battery system (four ea. MGHE24x300) These provide power to the ship via the inverters.
In conjunction with the electrical upgrade above, a Victron Skylla 24v 100amp charger was installed. This charger will accept a voltage range of 220-250 and 50/60hz. This serves two purposes. One, the vessel can accept 220v+ shore power from any marina worldwide. Second, the ship is now electrically isolated and protected from any shore power problems or earth leakage.
- Solbian Solar (SX 144 L JBE) panels x 8 on flybridge bimini plus
- Solbian solar panels x 6 on second bimini (14 total panels). The original logic of the power supply rotary switches on the 240v switchboard remains unchanged. Except that the ‘off’ position now supplies power from the inverters. To secure the electrical system for maintenance each inverter must be switched off at the unit.
- Battery chargers were installed on all main engine (24v) and generator (12v) start batteries, plus bow thruster (24v). The main engine start batteries and the bow thruster are charged by a three output Mastervolt 24v charge unit located in the starboard stabilizer space at the access stairs to the crew quarters/engine room. The generator start batteries are charged by a 12v to 12v DC charger located in the lazarette.
