The pilothouse of Piredmus is the showpiece of this impeccable vessel providing a spacious gathering place with dining abilities in addition to being the operational center of the vessel with a modern, extensive, and elaborate electronics package allowing for comfortable, safe and enjoyable navigation of the vessel. Upgraded oversized windows offer unrestricted views in all directions.
Aft of the pilothouse working area is a large office with desk providing ample storage which can be converted to a queen bed by way of a slide-out support and mattress toppers. This allows for either additional guest sleeping capacity or the ability for the captain to rest near the pilothouse during overnight passages. There is a head with toilet, sink and mirror on the starboard side reducing the need to leave the pilothouse during operations. A large full-height storage locker is centrally located for access from all areas of the pilothouse.
The settee can easily accommodate 3-4 crew members with quality site lines forward and to both sides while seated at the starburst pattern table. The view is enhanced by a wide forward windscreen of engineered glass, of a rating that permitted the removal of the standard center mullion resulting in a greater unobstructed view through the front window.
A drink refrigerator sits under the starboard side section of the settee.
Twin Stidd helm chairs add the convenience of easy conversation and an extra pair of eyes on the water and the navigation instruments. Chart plotter, radar, Maretron monitoring and cameras are displayed beautifully on four 19″ Hatteland X Series monitors with interchangeable connections to the vessel operational system providing flexibility to suit any operational style and includes the TV entertainment system if desired. These main glass displays are supplemented by extensive systems displays on both the upper and lower dashes. A separate speaker system can provide sound through a variety of inputs.
In addition to all lighting, computer screens and instrumentation being dimmable, a dimmable overhead red-light system allows eye-sensitive lighting during nighttime operations.
The upper and lower dash panels are mounted using continuous piano hinges to facilitate easy access to components behind them for any maintenance requirements.
Redundancy is present for all the essential navigation, machinery, and operational data for safe navigation and efficient operation of Piredmus. For a detailed description of the electronics complement, please see the heading “Navigation/Communication Electronics” below.
The pilothouse overhead panels are upholstered in matte black smooth leather finish, which along with the reverse slanted windscreens and instrument dimming capabilities, are designed to reduce light interference during nighttime passages.
A large overhead hatch in the pilothouse and two smaller hatches in the head and office are fitted with Oceanair insect and shade screens to provide fresh air.
Dutch doors on both sides of the pilothouse offer easy access to the upper deck and the wing operation stations for docking of the boat or access to other areas of the upper decks. The sole is micro-grooved cherry and ebony wood covered by a bound edge carpet easily removed for cleaning.
Head
Headroom: 6ʹ-10″
The head is located aft and to starboard, and is a great convenience while underway, and to accommodate guests onboard.
On Deck
There are three exterior control stations supplementing the main control console in the pilothouse: port and starboard “wing” stations just outside the pilothouse that allow outstanding sight lines along the full length of the boat, and are particularly useful when docking. The aft station in the cockpit offers another option when reversing into a slip or Med-mooring. All stations are equipped with thruster controls, main engine control, engine start and stop buttons, horn, an anchor windlass control and red night lighting. When Med-mooring, the anchor chain can be paid out while backing toward the quay.
The long foredeck easily handles the 14’ inflatable tender on Piredmus. A Steelhead ES1500 davit (equipped with a mast light for nighttime operations) with a weight rating of 1500 lbs extends to easily launch the tender from either side of the foredeck. Piredmus offers a Marquipt ladder for boarding the tender after launching. Once launched, the tender mounting chocks can be removed to create a flush foredeck. Two fiberglass kayaks are supported outside the foredeck rails on mounting brackets.
Having the pilothouse positioned aft produces a great sense of the boat’s position relative to maneuvering while docking in addition to reducing the vessel motion effect on the occupants in heavy seas.
The stainless-steel framed Bimini cover surrounding the pilothouse has integrated awnings over the side doors and covering for the seating area aft of the pilothouse. A large three burner, stainless steel BBQ on the aft pilothouse deck is sure to be a favorite place to grill and eat. Access to the pilothouse roof for maintenance is up a ladder aft starboard through a zipped hatch in the awning.
Mechanical
Piredmus is configured with a single main propulsion engine, and an auxiliary single “wing engine”. This configuration has been standard on all Nordhavn models up to 68ʹ since the first Nordhavn 46 in 1988. It has proven to be the most fuel efficient and very reliable configuration in the Nordhavn 40ʹ to 68ʹ size range over decades of long-range cruising millions of miles, including numerous trans-oceanic passages and circumnavigations.
This arrangement is most often configured as keel-cooled with dry stack exhaust for the main engine. Keel-cooling eliminates the need for a raw water pump with a rubber impeller. Only a freshwater coolant mixture circulates through the cooling system without raw water being introduced to any engine component, and with it the possibility of ingesting various forms of debris. The freshwater cooling system pump is metal vaned, and durable for many thousands of hours before replacement.
