Overview
Through the ‘80’s and into the ‘90’s, the performance cruiser/racer sailboats built by Henri Wauquiez in France were considered among the best of the time. Designed by Rob Humphreys and Ed Dubois to rival the style and capability of the famous Nautor Swan line, but at lower cost, the early Wauquiez offerings enjoyed worldwide success, with a strong reputation for strength and performance at sea, whether racing or cruising. The Centurion series included the 40′ model, with 33 hulls built between 1987 and 1993. CRESCENDO is Hull #32, built in 1992, so one of the last of that successful production run. Variations with the 40s and 41 followed, but under new ownership and worldwide economic pressures, the earlier “true” Wauquiez boats became the standard for reasonably priced and very capable offshore performance cruising sailboats. Of note with the Centurion 40 series, most were built with a moderate shoal draft of 5′ 4″, but a few were ordered with a deep draft keel for optimal upwind performance, which included Hull #32 CRESCENDO, making her ideal for the deeper waters and contrary winds of the Salish Sea, as well as coastal cruising from Alaska to Mexico.

Interior Accommodations:
The general layout includes a generous V-berth forward, followed by storage and hanging lockers to port and a spacious bathroom/shower to starboard with dual entrances. Amidships are opposing settees with a large double-dropleaf teak table on centerline. A straight settee to port pulls out to create a double berth, and the large U-shape settee to starboard provides a single berth with leecloth. There is a true sea berth behind the starboard settee.
Further aft is the large, forward-facing nav desk to port, and U-shaped galley to starboard with deep double stainless steel sinks, very generous ice box with both an evaporator plate and a freezer plate, gimballed 3-burner stove/oven and generous storage lockers above and below.
- Force 10 3-burner LPG stove/oven/broiler
- Frigibot engine-driven compressor for freezer; freezer plate, copper tubing and thermostat renewed in 2021
- Adler Barber 12V refrigeration unit, also in the large ice box, new in 2016
- Original tile countertops replaced with Corian
- On-demand pressure hot and cold water at the galley sinks
- Both raw and fresh water foot pumps and taps on the sink top
- Additional foot pump for draining the ice box
Furthest aft to port is the primary bathroom with very generous separate enclosed shower stall with 6′ 6″ headroom (very rare on boats less than 45′). Opposite to starboard is the aft stateroom, with a large queen berth extending under the cockpit well, along with teak storage lockers.
The removable teak companionway ladder has handholds built into either side, and non-skid pads on the treads. Access to the engine compartment behind the ladder, as well as a removable panel in the bathroom, and removable panels (top, back and side) in the stateroom.
General interior décor includes generous use of Burmese teak bulkheads, solid teak trim and cabinetry, teak and holly cabin sole, blue-green Alcantara cushion covers in very nice condition, soft overhead liners, combination of fixed windows and opening ports along the cabin sides (fixed lenses replaced 2016), and (6) Goiot overhead opening hatches in very good condition. There are two dorade ventilators forward, two amidships and another two aft. Cabin lighting includes upgraded LED red/white dome lights, and custom LED track lighting around the cabin. The entire interior of CRESCENDO is neat and clean, and obviously well-maintained, with pride of ownership evident throughout the boat.
