Nordhavn stays atop of newest construction innovations and regulations
The annual International Boabuilder’s Exhibition and Conference (IBEX) was held in Louisville, KY, last week and among its featured speakers was Nordhavn’s own Mike Telleria. Telleria was tapped to present to engineering teams from yachting manufacturers all over the world thanks to his vast technical knowledge and experience as a long-time boating and mechanical engineer. In addition to his presenting duties at the three-day conference, Telleria armed himself with the latest regulations builders will be required to implement in order to meet strict certification requirements as well as the latest innovations that will continue to keep Nordhavns amongst the most modern and technologically advanced vessels in the world.
Nordhavn’s recent trip to the International Boatbuilder’s Exhibition & Conference (IBEX) provided a glimpse at innovations that could soon find a home on our boats. There are continuous improvements being made in electrical components, battery technology, construction materials, and other areas that specifically target larger luxury yachts with comprehensive systems and considerable electrical demands.
However, product innovation alone is incomplete without upgrades to the knowledge, skills and techniques of the builders, designers, and installers responsible for delivering these advances to boat owners. IBEX covers this side of the effort with daily educational sessions put on by industry insiders who are at the forefront of their respective areas of expertise. Nordhavn’s own engineer and electrical designer Mike Telleria was invited to come and speak to attendees about the challenges of designing DC systems for large yachts, and share some of Nordhavn’s philosophy on keeping systems simple.
“It was an honor to be invited to share some of what we do at Nordhavn with industry peers,” Telleria said. “IBEX offers a tremendous wealth of information – progress on Lithium Ion batteries, new European regulations, and designing for increasingly large battery banks were a few of the topics that caught my interest.”
Keeping abreast of new standards and regulations, learning from leading industry experts, and looking for ways to innovate and improve are just a few of the reasons Nordhavn spends the time and money to send folks to events like IBEX and to make sure technical staff are American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) trained and certified.
“A trained and knowledgeable crew that is aware of the latest industry offerings and movements is one of the best investments any builder can make,” said Jeff Leishman, Co-Owner and Chief Designer of Nordhavn Yachts.
