Dana Point, CA – PAE, the industry leader in oceangoing power vessels, announces its newest model, the Nordhavn 72. Development of Nordhavn’s new flagship is in response to frequent requests received over the years to build a larger Nordhavn. Until now, the Nordhavn 62 has been the largest of the fleet.
The 72 is an advancement and refinement of PAE’s proven “modified” full displacement or MFD™ hull design. Following the underwater lineage of the 40, 47, 50 and 57, PAE’s innovative MFD™ hull form achieves superior seakeeping qualities, longer range, and greater speed than other full displacement vessels of similar size.
The exterior styling is elegant yet “businesslike,” reflecting the influence of commercial ship design and the aesthetics of today’s modern yacht. Already, the profile drawings have received rave reviews from dedicated Nordhavn owners looking to trade up.
Designed and engineered to be handled by just one couple, the Nordhavn 72 offers an interior arrangement that includes a luxurious owner’s suite, a VIP guest stateroom, plus two additional double suites. An interior design firm was commissioned by PAE to create modern, beautifully-functional accommodations that provide the ultimate in comfort and luxury.
Systems engineering is state-of-the-art, yet kept simple for management purposes. “Our experience running boats around the world confirms the importance of simplicity,” comments Joe Meglen, PAE principal and a key member of the 72 development team. “We want our owners to be able to take their boats to the far corners of the world without the need for full time crews.”
Fiberglass has been selected as the building material for its strength, reliability, non-corrosive qualities, low maintenance characteristics and high resale value. The vessel, which displaces 200,000 lbs., is built to extremely heavy scantlings. Being a true, full displacement design, there is no need to compromise hull integrity for the sake of saving weight.
The standard power configuration will be a single diesel engine mated to a fully-reversing controllable pitch propeller, allowing the propeller pitch to be adjusted to varying loads and sea conditions. A twin engine configuration is also offered. The 4,100 gallon fuel capacity will provide an estimated range of over 3,000 miles at normal cruising speeds.
Tooling will commence immediately following model tank testing scheduled for June 2002. Hull number one will be completed at the factory in December 2004.

How many N72s are there? Is there a significant living area increase over the N68? Thanks.
