N5902 is currently aboard a ship en route to La Paz but it has done plenty of cruising in the past year. Owners Larry and Jamie McCullough began 2020 with thoughts of taking Independence through the Panama Canal and returning to their home grounds in California. Alas, those dreams were dashed in March last year with reality of Coronavirus restrictions shutting them off from their cruising plans forcing an extended quarantine in Honduras. Desperate to return to the U.S., it was next adverse weather conditions keeping them put. After 7 weeks in Roatan, the McCulloughs finally seized an “adequate” weather window and began reversing course to Miami. After challenging wind and seas, Independence arrived to Florida, eventually making their way up to Jupiter where they kept the boat and were content to fly back home.
While the plan didn’t exactly carry out exactly as they had envisioned, Larry McCullough said it nonetheless confirmed he has the perfect boat. “The 59 handled some rough seas pretty well and she is capable of making long passages,” he said. “She kept us comfortable.”
McCullough created a video of the adventures they were able to have despite the chaos of the Coronavirus
