Nordhavn’s popular Distance Pennant Program was created to recognize the many Nordhavn owners and their great accomplishments of traveling the world’s oceans and enjoying the adventures of a lifetime. It is interesting to note that the average miles traveled is a little under half of a circumnavigation for each registered owner. Our goal is to reach 100 percent registration of all Nordhavns built and enter all of the miles traveled by previous owners.
From the earliest days of the age of sail up to the present time, the history of flags and the history of the sea have been intertwined. From at least the early 19th century, it has been the custom of ships returning from a long overseas deployment to fly an extra long commission pennant made up of whatever bunting could be assembled.
In the Royal Navy, this is known as the “paying off pennant” because a ship used to be taken out of commission and its crew “paid off” at the end of each cruise. In the United States Navy, it is called the homeward-bound pennant. Although not officially sanctioned by regulations, the Navy has issued guidelines for the use of this pennant in NTP-13(B), Flags, Pennants and Customs.

The first level is 2,500 miles. Subsequent pennants will be issued in additional 5,000 nm increments. Each will be a different color. No matter how the miles were accrued: one long trip, 50 short cruises or even if you have owned multiple Nordhavns, it’s the total miles accumulated that we are interested in.

| Voyage Details | We just arrived in San Diego after doing the famous Baja Bash. As we were told, and found out, May is not a good time for doing the Bash. We did love Baja though, the wildlife and scenery are magnificent. The only real negative I can come up with is the wind. I have talked to many people who have noticed the winds being more than in previous years. We will be heading north to the San Francisco Bay Area, our home, and on the way stop by the Nordhavn office and pick up our 10,000 NM Flag! After completing the Great Loop (January 2020) in Marathon Florida we traveled to Key West on our planned voyage to our home in California. From Key West we traveled to Isla Mujeres off of Cancun. From there south to Belize for about a month while a wrench was being thrown into our plans, a thing called COVID 19. As the pandemic created lock downs we thought we better get to Panama before everything is shut down. We made it as far as Roatan Honduras. When we arrived we were informed by Immigration that you have 24 hours to leave or plan on spending at least 2 weeks. At this time all of Central America was shut down, we were stuck. Two weeks turned into two months with hurricane season approaching. With little choice we had to return to Florida, straight up the Caribbean to just off Cuba and into Key West. In March of 2021 we traveled to the Bahamas: Bimini; Chub Cay; Nassau; Exumas; Eleuthera; then back to Florida. Currently in Clifton Tennessee after cruising all the Great Lakes to Chicago then down the Illinois, parts of the Mississippi, Ohio, Cumberland and Tennessee rivers. Cruising the "Great Loop". Almost done with the Great Loop. We entered Mobile Bay yesterday after a very long journey down the rivers from Chicago. March, 25, 2020 Independence is now in Roatan Honduras. We are currently locked down and told we will not be given a Zarpa (exit visa) for 30 days which started on March 12th when we arrived. Trying to get to Panama then up the West Coast to California. May 7, 2020. Panama, Costa Rica and Columbia closed for foreseeable future, therefore we had to abandon our plans of cruising through the Panama Canal, at least at this time. We left Roatan Wednesday April 29th and headed directly to Key West. After roughly 68 hours we arrived in Key West at 3 am Saturday May 2nd. We were not allowed to get off the boat anywhere in the Keys so we worked our way up the coast to Jupiter where we had arranged to leave the boat. |
