Nordhavn’s popular Distance Pennant Program was created to recognize the many Nordhavn owners and their great accomplishments of traveling the world’s oceans and enjoying the adventures of a lifetime. It is interesting to note that the average miles traveled is a little under half of a circumnavigation for each registered owner. Our goal is to reach 100 percent registration of all Nordhavns built and enter all of the miles traveled by previous owners.
From the earliest days of the age of sail up to the present time, the history of flags and the history of the sea have been intertwined. From at least the early 19th century, it has been the custom of ships returning from a long overseas deployment to fly an extra long commission pennant made up of whatever bunting could be assembled.
In the Royal Navy, this is known as the “paying off pennant” because a ship used to be taken out of commission and its crew “paid off” at the end of each cruise. In the United States Navy, it is called the homeward-bound pennant. Although not officially sanctioned by regulations, the Navy has issued guidelines for the use of this pennant in NTP-13(B), Flags, Pennants and Customs.

The first level is 2,500 miles. Subsequent pennants will be issued in additional 5,000 nm increments. Each will be a different color. No matter how the miles were accrued: one long trip, 50 short cruises or even if you have owned multiple Nordhavns, it’s the total miles accumulated that we are interested in.

Nov. 2018 - October 2019: 236nm - Purchased vessel in May 2018, finally started using it in November 2018. Mileage includes cruising around San Diego Bay, Mission Bay, and coast Pacific Waters (Oceanside, etc.).
October 2019 - March 2020: 1179nm - San Diego to Mexico (San Jose Del Cabo). Cruised Cabo waters for ~2 months, then cruised to La Paz in January 2020. Spent another couple months in Sea of Cortez. Covid then took the world by storm, and we ended up shipping the vessel to Nanaimo BC from La Paz as we travelled home separately by air. Boat ended up in Sidney BC via Canadian skipper, had work done (boom welding repair, re-rigging, and ABT Stabilizer shaft and seal replacement).
July 2020 - October 2020: 788nm - Roche Harbor WA to Wrangell AK. Finally got aboard Igloo again on July 9 2020 in Roche Harbor WA. Philbrooks Inc. skipper delivered her from Sidney BC across the border to Roche. Took Igloo to Semiahmoo Marina in Blaine, WA, where we planned to spend the winter...until we learned about Washington's Use Tax if we stayed longer than 60 days. Even with the paid extensions, staying until spring wasn't in the cards. So, after Shannon and the cat flew down and joined me, and a Costco run, we added a bit of fuel and headed north. Great weather until we rounded Cape Caution, then typical SE AK weather. Due to Covid, could not set foot on Canadian soil, but we anchored every night and had no really long days. Arrived Ketchikan on August 7, where we goofed around for a few days, then did the same in Meyer's Chuck before finally arriving in Wrangell on August 12. Boat spent winter in Wrangell.
March 2021 - June 2021: 847nm - Wrangell AK to Valdez AK. Hauled out in late March/early April for bottom paint, zincs, and misc. maintenance. Departed Wrangell on May 6 for final run home to Valdez AK. Took our time, stopped in many nice anchorages including a day layover in Warm Springs Bay. No long days/overnight runs until we made our Gulf Crossing in late May. May 19 we made the 143nm run from Graves Harbor to Yakutat, where we stayed ~4 days to wait out a storm, and May 24 we made the 231nm run from Yakutat to Port Etches just inside Prince William Sound. On May 25 we made the 'victory lap' from Port Etches to Valdez, and celebrated being home after boating afar for nearly 10 years.
Summer 2021-2023: Cruised in/around Prince William Sound.
June 2023 - August 2023: Departed PWS south, non-stop across the Gulf of AK (375 nm), entered Canada on July 30 on our way south for a refit in Seattle scheduled for fall/winter 2023/2024.
