Nordhavn’s popular Distance Pennant Program was created to recognize the many Nordhavn owners and their great accomplishments of traveling the world’s oceans and enjoying the adventures of a lifetime. It is interesting to note that the average miles traveled is a little under half of a circumnavigation for each registered owner. Our goal is to reach 100 percent registration of all Nordhavns built and enter all of the miles traveled by previous owners.
From the earliest days of the age of sail up to the present time, the history of flags and the history of the sea have been intertwined. From at least the early 19th century, it has been the custom of ships returning from a long overseas deployment to fly an extra long commission pennant made up of whatever bunting could be assembled.
In the Royal Navy, this is known as the “paying off pennant” because a ship used to be taken out of commission and its crew “paid off” at the end of each cruise. In the United States Navy, it is called the homeward-bound pennant. Although not officially sanctioned by regulations, the Navy has issued guidelines for the use of this pennant in NTP-13(B), Flags, Pennants and Customs.

The first level is 2,500 miles. Subsequent pennants will be issued in additional 5,000 nm increments. Each will be a different color. No matter how the miles were accrued: one long trip, 50 short cruises or even if you have owned multiple Nordhavns, it’s the total miles accumulated that we are interested in.

| Voyage Details | Karma is at her best when she is on the move! 2020 was a shakedown year for Karma; Stuart to the Chesapeake and back from June 12 to November 13 (575 hours on the meter). We learned a lot about big boat cruising, more complicated systems, mooring, anchoring and “new boat” stuff, also you can’t have a Nordhavn and be anonymous anywhere you travel. We even had a wedding party onboard in July. Nordhavn owners welcomed us everywhere we went, of note are the Dixon’s on N47 Southern Star and Clark & Michelle on N55 Roam. January 9, 2021 Karma’s winter home is Elbow Cay, Abacos Bahamas and down to Georgetown Exuma until April 7, 2021. The weather and waters were spectacular this year, maybe the best since our arriving in 2017, The Land and Sea Park seemed more settled this year than in the past. April 24, 2021 Heading towards Maine. We’ve become accustomed to life at 10 kts and 1500 rpms, offshore we turn 2250 and do a respectable 13-15 kts, N59 lets us get to our destination just a little bit sooner. Our routine is rinse and repeat we enjoy familiar anchorages and marinas but try to fill in the gaps with new experiences. 2021 is no exception. Stuart to Cocoa, Cocoa to Flagler cement plant, to Fernadina to Beaufort SC, to the Low County around Karma’s home port Charleston, SC. We like to anchor 2 days, then grab a slip for a few days. Claiborne needs to run and gets cranky if she can’t be on hard ground two or three times a week. Bypassing the Chesapeake this year after a hot summer season 2020, we do stop to say hi to old friends and family in Norfolk, Annapolis, St. Michael’s however. June 19, Cape May is still a favorite and we scored slip #1 at Utch’s doesn’t get any more convenient or rustic. July 1, Newport for the holiday weekend/week it’s crazy town. July 12, Maine!
